Last weekend’s basement show at Gay Gardens was a doozy… you know it’s of note when The Boston Phoenix is talking about it the following Thursday. Speedy Ortiz played right in the middle of a five-band bill, and opened with one of my favorite jams of 2012. “Taylor Swift” gets in your head, robs the place, and gets out in a little over two minutes. Tempo/time signature changes straight outta 1994 in the best way. Pairing this band with Paul Q. Kolderie’s recording and Justin Pizzoferrato’s mixing might make this The Most Massachusetts Song of 2012 too. Something’s in the Northampton water.
Saturday’s set included songs from their forthcoming Sports 10”, which is being released by Exploding Into Sound next month. I would recommend staying tuned.
